On that day, traffic goes crazy, restaurants are filled by families celebrating their mothers and grandmothers, flower shops & flower stands make their Agosto, their best selling month. We at the New Orleans Hispanic Heritage Foundation wish to honor and celebrate all the mothers that are the foundation of our strong communities. El Salvador and Guatemala also celebrate Mother’s Day on May 10th each year. His article supported by a media campaign and the Catholic Church led to the holiday becoming widely observed, with May 10th becoming the accepted date of Mother's Day in Mexico. The tradition spread to parts of the country. The tradition of “Día de las Madres” first began on May 10th of 1922 when Rafael Alducin, editor of the Mexico City newspaper El Excelsior, wrote an article advocating the celebration of Mother’s Day across Mexico. The beautiful tradition to commemorate mothers can be traced back to the ancient Greeks, who held festivities to honor Rhea, the mother of the gods. The word “mother” is similar across vastly different languages, and inspires us all to reflect on the nurturing powers and capacity of these special women. Every year in the spring a great number of cultures around the world take a day to celebrate their mothers.
